Oh What A Night…

by Bob on December 16, 2010

…and while it wasn’t late December back in ’63 (more mid December in 2010), it was certainly a special evening that Frankie Valli would have felt proud to have attended. Ladies and Gents, the inaugural NOPAs really were an evening of high quality.

We had thrills! Barry Glendenning humoured us all with his acceptance speech, whilst the Football Ramble basked in their Peoples Choice award.

We had spills! Several award winners seemed to have trouble keeping track of the detachable top part of their award. Danny Last of European Football Weekends likened the evening to ‘an episode of the Crystal Maze with everyone searching for their missing globes’.

And we had plenty of other stuff that doesn’t rhyme with either ‘thrills’ or ‘spills’. Congratulations to the winners on the night, who were as follows:

  1. Best Young Blogger – Sian Ranscombe for From A Girl Who Loves the Gunners
  2. Socrates Award – Ian King for Two Hundred Percent
  3. Best New Blog – Michael Cox for Zonal Marking
  4. Best Contributor to Blog or Podcast – Ian McIntosh for In Bed With Maradona
  5. Best Podcast – The Football Weekly
  6. Best Blog – Danny Last & European Football Weekends
  7. Peoples Choice award – The Football Ramble

A big thanks to all who attended, a huge congratulations to all nominees and winners, and a manly handshake and slap on the back for such wonderful generosity from everyone in donating so much to our charity DS Active on the night.

Here’s to next year’s NOPAs!

Absolutely superb night, Thanks to all the Picklive and Socrates guys for putting it on. Delighted to be part of it, the nightmare journey was worth it.

Can’t wait for next year I’ll be there nominated or what.

I’ve just come home from work and I feel awful. I both blame and thank you.
An absolutely superb night, such a worthy cause, and was worth coming to just to see Olly nearly take out someone who tried to nick a bottle of champagne (James Appell will know what I’m on about, if no one else does…)

And you learnt a valuable lesson about last trains and living in the sticks too Mark

  • Olly

You’ve got to get up pretty early to get one over on me. Or watch me nearly fall over when getting onto a raised stage. One of the two.

Fantastic night and really good to see all the donation tins so full. Well done everyone at Picklive and all the winners. Oh and well done to the at least 2 of the Ramble boys for understanding how best to utilise a free bar

My favourite was moment was as he left Clive Tyldesley gave me a friendly punch in the ribs and said “you are a great awards ceremony compere”. I will hear this immortal phrase every time I’m listening to Clive commentate from now on.

Who were the judges? And how many votes did the people’s choice get?

    • Bob

Hi KT,the judges were mentioned a few blog posts back. Brentford midfielder David Hunt, Roy Meredith at Champ Man, Euro football knowledge-dropper Andy ‘Top Brass’ Brassell, Andy Rose of the Daily Star and Olly Frank of Picklive.

People’s Choice got just under 2,000 individual votes. People were only allowed to vote once.
